The Graduate Program in Environmental Science and Technology has an interdisciplinary character, which is reflected in the organization of its research lines: Natural resources and sustainability and Environmental technology applied to the semiarid region. These lines of research are structured in such a way that they contribute to the realization of basic and applied research for the training of human resources capable of proposing solutions to the challenges of sustainable development.

The research lines defined for the program cover projects, under development and future proposals, related to sustainable agriculture, food security, sustainable energy, climate change, biodiversity and environmental education. With the common objective of incorporating to Brazilian and international science a body of knowledge and potential practices for the effective sustainable development of the semiarid region.

From the point of view of society, the lines of research focus on political, economic and social aspects situated in the cultural context, their relationship with collective health issues and with environmental issues. It also includes the analysis of the forms of occupation of spaces and use of natural resources, as well as the forms of human intervention in the environment that have generated environmental impacts and their direct and indirect consequences on the quality of life and health of society, seeking to address regional issues Northeast, especially in the Caatinga biome.

Regarding the environmental aspect, the quality of life is understood not only from the point of view of the way in which man appropriates the natural environment, but also in aspects related to the preservation of biodiversity, adequate management of biomes and knowledge of the potential for the use of natural resources from the perspective of improving the quality of life, which implies both contributions from an economic and technological point of view to the semi-arid region as well as knowledge of the constitution, dynamics and evolution of the ecosystems in focus.

Line of research in Natural Resources and Sustainability aims to carry out research and train human resources aimed at expanding knowledge about natural resources in ecosystems and their sustainable use. The line includes interdisciplinary basic and applied research projects that investigate ecosystems in relation to their natural resources, social and environmental interactions and impacts, sustainable use and possible mitigating measures that promote sustainable development.

Research Line in Environmental Technology Applied to the Semiarid Region aims to provide technologies and solutions mainly related to sustainable agriculture, conservation of natural species and use of the Caatinga and food security for semiarid development. Regarding the economic potential of the Biome, this line is aimed at using raw materials from the Caatinga for the development and application of technological processes and products.
